Holbrooke = Loser, Sherzai = Winner?

Sorry for lack of posts. Apparently my knowledge of Ishans, Hojas, Sayyids, Naqshbandis, Hanafi reformers, Hanafi conservatives, those “muwahiddun,” friends of brother Qutb, government-sanctioned ulema and other various competitors in the spiritual arena is lacking. I have therefore been punished with a sizable reading list. So I’ve been really busy.

So I’ll just point to some rather amusing stuff I’ve been reading.

#1) The Wall Street Journal hearts Gul Agha Sherzai, but Josh Foust is not so sure. Neither is Spencer Ackermann.

#2) This is hilarious. Richard Holbrooke, the Viceroy envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan (who has his fingers in everything Afghan these days), was on the board of AIG (FAIL), was a managing director at Lehman Brothers (FAIL) and received a “Friends of Angelo” sweetheart mortgage from Countrywide (crook). Thanks to Spencer for pointing that out. With a recent record of failure and corruption like that, I can see how he is just perfect for Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Holbrooke: “Do as I say, not as I do.”

And one final depressing note: Yes, Afghan officials are still involved in drug smuggling. But don’t worry, a tough new US envoy is all over that problem. His name? Richard Holbrooke (FAIL).

  1. Another fun story about Holbrooke, from today’s NYT:

  2. Karadzic obviously wasn’t schooled enough in Clintonian nuance to understand the definition of “is” in this case was that there “is” no chance in H*** that Holbrooke would keep his word.
